SOME MINOR NOISE

this week, valued customer affiliate Sammy D is taking the reins to bring us an interview he conducted with toronto group 'some minor noise'.  // pjap

who are you and how do you make music?

we are some minor noise. we are an indielectro noise-pop duo who makes music with computers and microphones in small rooms and closets. respectively.

how long have you been making music this way?

we've been working together for about six months.

what do you sing about and why?

Jane: life. hardships. relation-hardships. boys & going crazy.

is it easier to tour as a cybernetic duo?

yes, because we don't have to bring a drum kit and pay a drummer. and all we need is a laptop, a MIDI controller and a microphone. and clothes.

do you have a special diet that helps you be creative?

jane: sadness and heartbreak. i practically drink tears.
Wayne: alcohol. probably even a bit too much alcohol.

can you fly in your dreams?

jane: i can usually get off the ground, but i can't stay in the air. kind of like jumping really high.
wayne: i once dreamt that i could fly, it was rad. but usually no.

would you prefer to retire at age 80 or explode at 50?

jane: which ever one, as long as it's the result of being struck by lightning.
wayne: explode at 50, no question.

three countries you would rather not visit on a world tour?

jane: each place is good in its own way, and anywhere can be an adventure.
wayne: afghanistan, it appears to be scary in the newsmedia. north korea, it appears to be scary in the newsmedia.

favourite toronto coffeeshop

jane: Moonbean in Kensington, I don't drink caffeine, but they have cheap sandwhiches.
wayne: I don't care, as long as the coffee doesn't taste terrible, I drink it for the caffeine.

favourite postmodern artist

jane: i know nothing about art, but my friend Phresha does some cool stuff, check her out at kittensashimi.com.
wayne: i disagree with the idea of having a favourite anything - it boxes you in. also, i am not very cultured in the art world. wait -does banksy count?

the one that got away

jane: i don't believe in "the one" or that they could "get away."you can have a connection with a lot of people, and turning that into a relationship takes work. if it ended, it ended for a reason. learn, grow, move on, write songs.
wayne: there's plenty more fish in the sea. but the sea is polluted.

hairstyle dos and don'ts

wayne: mullets. yuck. also, girls with skrillex haircuts are getting lamer and lamer.
jane: don't look... too stupid? i don't know. i don't care. do what you want.

day jobs?

wayne: wine merchant. minimum wage. fuck yeah.
jane: no comment.

fave TO bands

wayne: Azari and III, death from above, the weekend, crystal castles.
jane: diamond rings and peaches.

chillout music

wayne: i really like cults, neon indian, the drums and SBTRKT.
jane: i don't really listen to very much music... i like whatever wayne's playing.

is SMN sad music? happy music? both?

wayne: it's kind of manic depressive.
even when it sounds happy and upbeat i imagine someone crying so hard that they've started to laugh uncontrollably at their misfortune.

musical heroes?

wayne: musicians are just people, dunno if i would say anyone is heroic. though i do admire the work of people like Alan Palomo (Neon Indian) for being my age and having such a great body of work.
jane: ditto, i met one of my idols once and it was a really good lesson to seperate the music from the musican. he was kind of sleezy.

midnight snack.

jane: i'm usually eating dinner at midnight, so...dinner.
wayne: various cheeses, olives and pickled beets.
